NBC Rejects Hapa Family Show Based on ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Producer’s Life
NBC is not moving forward with a half-hour show about a mixed race family based on the life of “Fresh Off The Boat” co-executive producer Kourtney Kang.
The decision comes a few months after the network ordered the untitled comedy’s pilot. According to Deadline, it is axed alongside Bill Lawrence’s “Spaced Out,” Max Mutchnick and Jeff Astrof’s “Relatively Happy” and the female-led reboot of the 1991 film “What About Barb?”.
The show supposedly explored the joys and struggles of growing up as the only girl in the only mixed race family in Philadelphia’s suburbs, The Hollywood Reporter noted. Her goal: become a Laker Girl just like Paula Abdul.
Kang was in-charge of the script. Nahnatchka Khan, who worked with her in “Fresh Off The Boat,” was to co-exec produce with Mandy Summers and Fred Savage. Savage was to direct.
NBC committed to the project from 20th Century Fox Television and Khan’s Fierce Baby Productions last year, Variety noted.
