Walking along “Quinceañera street” in downtown Mexico City, I was intrigued by the displays of princess-like dresses twirling around behind glass windows, in stark contrast to the graffitied and grungy buildings housing them. Though the glittery blurs of fabric at first melded into a smear of color, I began noticing the sometimes humorous differences between the dresses. 

Some were accentuated with a Mary Poppin-esque umbrella propped atop a twirling mannequin, some boasted “bridal” styles, some came in bubble gum pink pastels, others in lime green. Crammed along the street were makeshift stalls of wood and metal showcasing everything from bedroom slippers donning bows and embroidered names to dolls wearing their own Quinceañera dresses.  Read more...
