Najib: India's GST 28pct, but Malaysians make noise about 6pct
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is not in the dark about Malaysians' aversion to paying more taxes.
In his officiating speech at the MIC annual general meeting today, Najib took note of MIC president Dr S Subramaniam who had, earlier in his speech, said many Indian students found that their respective National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) loans have not been sufficient.
"I accept the view on PTPTN, and we will look into this in more detail because it is not only an Indian problem, (but affects) all communities.
"But we cannot increase taxes (because) Malaysians don't like to pay more taxes, they only like public holidays, food. They don't like to pay more."
Najib, however, cited India as an example where the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate is at 28 percent.
"We are only at six percent, but even then people make noise about it and get angry at the government.
"But actually it's not the government, it's all traders who increase the prices of goods and services, and blame it on the government.
"One hundred and sixty-five countries in the world (implement the GST), with India at 28 percent, so Indian Malaysians cannot complain," he said.
The GST was introduced on April 1, 2015 at six percent.
The Customs Department hopes to achieve its tax revenue target of RM42 billion, which includes contributions from the GST. It collected RM41 billion in total taxes in 2016.- Mkini
