IT’S NOW OR NEVER: LET MAHATHIR MAKE THE FINAL DECISIONS OR NAJIB WILL WIN – ZAID WARNS ‘BIG EGO’ HARAPAN LEADERS

When we have implicit trust in someone, it means we have unreservedly full confidence in him or her. It means we have dispelled all doubt about this person’s suitability to carry out the tasks at hand.

I have full confidence and unreservedly have no doubt that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the man we need to lead us, not only to unseat Prime Minister Dato Sri Najib Razak, but to rebuild a country that has gone mad. That is why, two years ago, I gave a public speech wherein I called on Malaysians to rally behind him. For that, I was charged for “insulting” someone (presumably the PM), although the charge sheet did not name the person I had supposedly insulted. I also received public reprimands from many quarters for that speech.

Yet the Opposition has been somewhat united and more credible now that Tun Dr Mahathir is the undisputed leader. We are on the last lap of the race, and it’s critical that leaders in the Pakatan Harapan be reminded that only deep, implicit trust in Tun Dr Mahathir can resolve the many differences that are still outstanding before the next election.

BIG EGO LEADERS

I heard that there are still differences over seat allocation, for example. Some think they are from the “senior party” and therefore must contest more seats than others. The new kids on the block also want more seats than they deserve. Naturally, Bersatu will want the most seats; otherwise, their claim of being an alternative Malay party to UMNO will sound hollow. I hope winning candidates are not forgotten and are placed in the right constituencies, even if they are not from the party that has prior claim to that seat. Flexibility can be our strength.

Whatever it is, Pakatan leaders must have full trust in Tun Dr Mahathir to make the right decisions. He has the experience and the wisdom to do the right thing. It’s not easy to accommodate and reconcile competing claims from all the “big shots”. Pakatan leaders must be prepared to let him resolve the competing claims quickly. The General Election will probably be called after the Budget, so we do not have much time left.

From my UMNO days, I know Tun Dr Mahathir always listens well. That’s why his meetings can be inordinately long. But it’s important that after we have made our case, we allow him to decide the big issues. If we want the people to trust the Opposition, we need to resolve issues quickly. That is the encouragement they need to vote the present Government out.
