Shahnaz seeking more than RM30m awarded!

KUALA LUMPUR: Shahnaz Majid will be challenging the RM30 million “mutaah” (conciliatory gift) awarded to her by the Syariah Court.

Her lawyer Akberdin Abdul Kader said they will be filing an appeal against the quantum that the Syariah Court ordered her former husband, businessman Mahmud Bekir Taib, to pay.

“We think she should get more based on the ex-husband’s income.”

“We have until March 24 to file the notice (of appeal). Currently, we are at the stage of finalizing the appeal,” he said.

Mahmud Bekir is the son of Sarawak Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Responding to a report that Mahmud Bekir had filed for a stay from paying Shahnaz the RM30 million, Akberdin said he has yet to receive notice.

Last week, the Syariah High Court ordered Mahmud Bekir to pay RM30 million in “mutaah” to his former wife.

Judge Abdul Karim Wahab ruled that Shahnaz, who divorced Mahmud Bekir on 11 May 2011, deserves the “mutaah” and RM30 million can help her to deal with the sadness throughout the marriage.

The couple was married on 9 January 1992 and have a son, Raden Murya, now 23.

Prior to their divorce, Mahmud Bekir and Shahnaz were separated for 11 years.
