Drinking coffee right after waking up is a habit of most people. Well, there is nothing better than enjoying a cup of coffee in the garden or in the coffee shop nearby. However, even though coffee is an amazing energy booster, it shouldn’t be drunk on an empty stomach.
Drinking a cup of black coffee on an empty stomach increases the amount of hydrochloric acid in the digestive tract. This can be quite messy as it causes digestive issues due to the fact that it makes the digestion of proteins much more difficult. If protein is not fully absorbed or broken down, it causes digestive issues like irritation, bloating, inflammation of the bowel, and even colon cancer.
This is the reason why many medical experts advise people to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach, right after waking up. Coffee also increases cortisol levels in the body, a hormone which controls the biological clock. Moreover, coffee increases the levels of acid in the body, causing bloating and vomiting.
With this being said, it becomes evident that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can be detrimental to the body. Make sure you have a breakfast prior to drinking coffee or dilute it with some milk or butter, in case you are pressed for time or simply cannot start the day without a cup of coffee.
