Bride Dies of Cancer Moments Before Her Wedding in the Hospital
A Chinese man was left devastated and heartbroken after his fiancée died from cancer just moments before they were supposed to get married at a hospital in Zhengzhou, Henan province.
The tragic moment happened on Aug. 12 when Xiao Hui succumbed to chronic myeloid leukemia — a cancer of the white blood cells – just as she was about to get married to her fiancé, 27-year-old Yang Feng, according to Straits Times.
The decision to get married came to Yang on Aug. 10 after he discovered that Xiao’s condition took a turn for the worse.
Yang found out that Xiao had passed away at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday. He was trying to hold back tears as he spoke with the reporters documenting the wedding at the hospital.
“The wedding can’t be held anymore,” he said before eventually entering the ward, as seen in a Pear Video uploaded on YouTube channel Shi Pin San Tiao. “Please leave, all of you.”
Yang and Xiao first met two years ago when she hitched a ride with him during a delivery trip. She told the deliveryman that she was first diagnosed with the disease when she was 24. But Yang still fell in love with her and the two began dating.
“If only I had gotten to know her earlier,” he said.
“I found her pitiful at first, but as we interacted more, I wanted to take care of her all her life, and I started to pursue her,” Yang added.
During their time together, Yang would spend 3,000 yuan ($435) to 4,000 yuan ($480) of his 5,000 yuan ($726) monthly salary to help her with treatment.
Yang and Xiao’s tragic story was shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo by China Central Television (CCTV). The post was shared over 2,000 times and liked by more than 20,000 netizens.
One user wrote that the couple had true love, “Maybe this is true love – not expecting to grow old together, but just being with each other until the final moment.”
“If there is an afterlife, I wish you will meet again and never be separated,” another Weibo user wrote.
