Hong Kong Sex Doll Shop Shut Down Over ‘Try Before You Buy’ Policy

Hong Kong authorities have recently closed a sex doll shop after it was found to offer a “try before you buy” promo to its patrons.

Situated in the town of Kwun Tong, the shop, called “This Mary,” reportedly allowed customers to come in and try out the merchandise before buying, local news outlets reported.

In an interview with the South China Morning Post, the owner revealed that clients can spend an hour with the sex doll of his choice inside a private room for a “trial” fee of HK $480 ($61). Bringing along a female friend for a 90-minute session with the doll would cost a potential buyer HK $860 ($109).

Pornographic videos are also shown on TV screens inside the private rooms during the sessions.

Should the customer decide to make a purchase, a doll can be bought at prices ranging from HK $18,000 ($2,300) to HK $30,000 ($3,800).

According to the owner, customers were required to wear condoms and the dolls were disinfected after each session.

Despite these claimed hygienic practices, however, it became apparent that the sales tactic had made the shop verging onto something too close to an actual brothel.

Since such establishments are illegal to operate in Hong Kong, authorities ordered to have the shop shut down after reports about its practice emerged in the media.

While there are currently no specific laws against a “sex doll brothel,” the shop was still warranted to be closed down for “publicly displaying sex toys for sale and for providing customers with pornographic films.”

The store may have also violated local regulations by operating as an unlicensed guesthouse. Local police conducted a raid on Nov. 24, resulting in the arrest of the owner.

This Mary has since posted an announcement on Facebook, saying that its business had been temporarily suspended due to some “problems with the company’s operating model.”
