Najib's confidant used law firm to receive RM2.5m, reveals witness
NAJIB TRIAL | A prominent member of Najib Abdul Razak's inner circle used a law firm to receive an RM2.5 million cheque from the former premier, a witness told the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.
Lawyer Ashraf Razak, who is the prosecution's 18th witness, confirmed that his client Habibul Abdul Rahman passed him the cheque from Najib that was made out to law firm Zulqarnain & Co.
Ashraf said he was required to sign a note as an acknowledgement of their arrangement regarding the cheque and was informed that the sum was meant for a contract involving defence supplies.
After the law firm cashed the cheque, Ashraf, who was a partner at Zulqarnain & Co, testified that Habibul instructed that cheques be issued to the latter's wife and children.
"He (Habibul) instructed me to issue other cheques to other parties, including cash cheques," he said, adding that sometimes the money flowed through his own personal account.
When DPP Muhammad Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi asked Ashraf if he had questioned Habibul over the source of the funds, the witness replied in the negative.
"I have known Habibul for a long time. Moreover, he is a corporate figure and a GLC director. I didn't think about asking him," he added.
For this task, Ashraf said he collected a fee of RM50,000.
Low-profile 'media advisor'
During cross-examination by lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, the witness said there was another instance where he received money on behalf of Habibul.
This involved a company called Fuelsubs House Sdn Bhd, which worked on managing fuel subsidies.
It was also established during cross-examination that Habibul is a trained accountant and political analyst.
Shafee: When you chat with him (Habibul), you can tell his knowledge in political analysis is deep. It's not a coffee shop talk.
Ashraf: Yes.
Shafee: You know he provides services in political analyses, strategic aspect and advisory.
Ashraf: Yes
Shafee: He is frequently involved in programmes to implement his analyses.
Ashraf: Not within my knowledge.
Shafee then suggested that Habibul was involved in numerous businesses and that Ashraf mixed up what the RM2.5 million cheque was for. However, the witness stuck to his testimony.
Shafee: He has several projects and channels for his advisory work.
Ashraf: Yes.
Shafee: Because of this, perhaps you forgot what Habibul said about (exhibit) P48 (cheque) was for.
Ashraf: No. He clearly said (the cheque) was for his defence contract.
Habibul, who had always maintained a low-profile, was reputedly Najib's media advisor.
Habibul was made non-executive director at Malaysia Airlines (MAS) in Sept 2017. Two weeks later, Irishman Peter Bellew resigned as MAS CEO. - Mkini
