JOHOR BARU: Marine police nabbed 22 illegal immigrants attempting to exit the country illegally near Sungai Pulai here.
Marine Police Region 2 Commander Asst Comm Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said that 12 Indonesian men, nine women and a two-year-old girl, were detained at about 10.30pm on Friday (May 3).
"The suspects, aged between two and 38, were arrested after our surveillance team found two fibreglass boats ferrying the illegal immigrants through unchartered waters.
"Two other men, believed to be the boat skippers, were also arrested," he said in a statement here on Saturday (May 4).
ACP Khiu said those detained would be investigated under the Immigration Act, while the two skippers would be investigated under Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act.
In an unrelated case, ACP Khiu said that marine police also seized 5,400 litres of cooking oil worth RM13,500 during Ops Landai at Jalan Penyabong in Mersing, here.
He added that they made an arrest at about 7pm on Friday after two weeks of surveillance.
"Our patrol team came across a lorry heading towards Jalan Penyabong from Jambatan Endau.
"Inspection on the back of the lorry found six square tanks filled with cooking oil, each weighing about 900kg," he said.
ACP Khiu said investigations on the 53-year-old lorry driver revealed that the oil came from Kuantan, Pahang, and was being sent to Pasir Gudang, here.
He added the lorry driver was arrested under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board Act 1998.- Star
