Ready for snap polls, Umno-PAS discuss formation of PN secretariat

Umno and PAS' Muafakat Nasional pact is finalising its preparations to face a snap 15th general election as rumours continue to mount over yet another attempt to initiate a change in who holds federal power.

According to a source, the preparations which include the formation of an official PN secretariat, were discussed during a Muafakat Nasional meeting held at the Umno headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night.

"GE15 is expected to be called after pending matters in PN and Bersatu have been resolved," the source told Malaysiakini.

Meanwhile, sources also said the issue of seat distribution between Umno and PAS has been discussed and agreed upon but not finalised.

The PN secretariat is expected to undertake the next stages of discussion and negotiations for seat distributions not only between Umno and PAS but also with Bersatu and other allies.

Defections

Ongoing developments which include defections from Pakatan Harapan to PN at federal and state levels have further fueled speculation of snap polls before the end of the government's stipulated five-year term on May 9, 2023.

Within the political parties, Bersatu is fighting to mend a rift between its members aligned to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is party president and acting chairperson, and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has so far refused to accept that his membership status has been automatically nullified.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in a recent Facebook post had indicated the party's readiness to face snap polls sharing several photographs taken during former premier Najib Abdul Razak's visit to his house.

This came amid intense speculation over renewed attempts by Harapan to secure the needed number of MPs to once again reclaim Putrajaya after losing it to PN through a series of defections.

Najib had previously argued that calling for GE15 would be the last resort in returning political stability to the country. - Mkini
