DAP rep’s quit decision surprising but a food for thought - SUPP president

Malaysiakini

The announcement made by Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei of his intention to quit DAP late last night came as a surprise to many but it is also becoming food for thought over the way the party is treating dissenting voices.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian said he agreed with Wong’s claim that DAP had kept on employing politics of attacks even when they became part of the ruling Pakatan Harapan government before.
“Wong is providing our people food for thought by voicing out his disappointment over DAP’s refusal to listen to any dissenting voice and lack of inclusivity in opinion and viewpoints,” he said in a statement today.
Wong announced his decision to quit DAP through a statement issued late last night, citing that he had been sick and tired with the political moves in the party which merely meant to seek for survival, which had totally deviated from its struggles when he first joined the party in 2006.
“It is a wrenching pain when I think of DAP. I am of the view that the party has lost the greatest opportunity when ruling the country at the federal level to have our ideas and dreams realised into actions,” he said.
Wong, who won the Padungan seat in the 11th Sarawak state election in 2016, said during the 22-month rule under Harapan, what was said in front of the people and what DAP had promised to the people was seemed to have gone down the drain.
He said that when DAP was the opposition, they had launched a lot of political attacks and continued to do so when they became part of the ruling coalition.
“Politics of Sarawak is in need of some positivity in order to see the state of Sarawak moving forward,” he said.
As he had been elected for the Padungan seat through DAP ticket, he said that he would continue to serve as the DAP assemblyperson for the constituency throughout the whole term.
“I have no plan to join any other political party and I will not stand in any election in the near future. I want to focus on my legal practice and give more time to my family…I am not seeking re-election in the next Sarawak state election,” said Wong, who is also the state DAP vice-chairperson prior to his resignation.
So far DAP Sarawak leaders had yet to issue any statement with regards to his resignation.
