Police arrest NGO activist over sexual assault claim
Police have detained a prominent NGO activist who was accused of sexual assault.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim was quoted as saying that the suspect would have his statement recorded before being released on police bail.
The arrest was pursuant to a police report lodged by a trainee doctor who claimed he was sexually assault on Nov 4 last year.
Malaysiakini is withholding the name of the activist as the case has not been brought to court and to protect the identities of the complainants.
The activist had denied the allegations as malicious, and that his accuser had an axe to grind after losing a civil suit.
According to the trainee doctor's report on Feb 17, the suspect, who is also a doctor, had “groped and kissed” the complainant on the first day the latter reported for work.
The 27-year-old complainant alleged that the suspect had hugged him after hearing of his financial woes when pursuing his degree abroad.
"He then started kissing my neck and cheeks," he claimed.
According to Mazlan, the complainant made a late police report over the incident "for fear his career would be destroyed" as the suspect was his supervisor and was influential in the industry.
The police chief said the case was being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which covers assault or use of criminal force on a person with the intent to outrage modesty.
This is punishable with up to 10 years in prison, a fine, or whipping.
Mazlan advised others who faced similar cases to come forward and lodge police reports so that action can be taken against the perpetrators. - Mkini
