Sabah sets Sept 1 for tourism restart
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has set Sept 1 for the reopening of the state to foreign tourists. Deputy Chief Minister Christina Liew said travellers from countries declared Covid-19 free or “green” regions such as China would be allowed to come to the state.
Liew is expected to meet with China’s consul-general in Kota Kinabalu next week on restarting tourism between Sabah and China.
“Not all of China has been affected badly by Covid-19. We are looking forward to this in September. All of the agencies under the state tourism, culture and environment ministry are now working on this matter,” she said during her visit to the local night market in Gaya Street here tonight.
Liew said the tourism industry had requested a July reopening, however, the government wants to observe the situation first for any sudden Covid-19 spike.
She said she had met AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes who had indicated that there were 90% passenger loads in all sectors served by the airline.
On another note, Liew vowed that all the environmental assessment and social impact studies on the proposed RM7 billion Lok Kawi beachfront project would be done before it commenced.
Assuring state environmentalists and political leaders of their concern, Liew said a consultation would also be done with the NGOs so their views would be taken into consideration. - FMT
