Reconsider arrest warrant: JMM head says he did not receive hearing notice

Malaysiakini

Pertubuhan Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president Azwanddin Hamzah urged the authorities to reconsider an arrest warrant for him over his failure to attend committal proceedings filed against him by former primary industries minister Teresa Kok.
Azwanddin (above) said this is because he did not receive a notice to attend the proceedings.
“In the bankruptcy notice published by Berita Harian dated Aug 12, there were no notice or instructions given to me to attend court on Aug 28.
“If I had received any notice or calls from Kok’s lawyer, then I definitely would have attended court and given my full cooperation.
“I would like to state that the action taken by the court in issuing an arrest warrant against me is shocking and should be reconsidered,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that Kok’s lawyer Sankara Nair has his phone number as they have been in contact a few times previously.
Sankara had yesterday said that Azwanddin knew about the proceedings today as a notification letter had been sent to him.
Judge Rohani Ismail issued the arrest warrant against Azwanddin at the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday.

The application for committal proceedings against Azwanddin was filed last Oct 8 following his failure to submit an open apology in three newspapers, namely Sinar HarianThe Star and Sin Chew Daily and to pay costs, which were among the terms of settlement for a defamation suit filed by the Seputeh MP against him.
Azwanddin said he had already made an open apology to Kok, referring to a Malaysiakini article on Oct 17, 2019.
Kok had filed the defamation suit against Azwanddin for linking her in a land dispute involving the Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple in Seafield, Subang Jaya. The case was amicably resolved at the High Court on July 29 with Rohani recording the terms of the settlement. - Mkini
