Sabah polls: PBS joins the fray in 15 seats, to clash almost half with BN
SABAH POLLS | PBS tonight announced that it will be contesting 15 seats in the Sabah election, six of which will clash with BN.
PBS, which is part of the Perikatan Nasional-led federal government but is going solo in the Sabah election, said it initially planned to contest 25 seats.
"But (out of) respect to the other like-minded parties, we decided that most importantly is to win and take over the Sabah government for the sake of the people and future development of the state," said PBS president Maximus Ongkili (photo, below) in a statement.
Despite its scaled-back ambitions, PBS will clash with Umno in three seats and with PBRS in another three seats.
The friendly fire against Umno will be in Bengkoka, Tanjung Aru and Telupid while against PBRS, they will clash in Tandek, Matuggong and Kadamaian.
PBS' clash with BN could increase to seven seats once MCA announces their own candidates.
This is because PBS also wants to contest in Kapayan, which the MCA contested in the 2018 general election.
MCA has yet to announce their candidates.
Interestingly, PBS' chosen candidate for Kapayan is Edwin Bosi who served as the constituency's representative from 2013 to 2018 after winning on a DAP ticket.
Edwin quit DAP in 2017 due to "irreconcilable differences" and was replaced by DAP's Jannie Lasimbang who won the seat in 2018.
The remaining seats that PBS will be contesting in are Tamparuli, Kiulu, Inanam, Kundasang and Melalap which it contested in the last general election.
It will also contest in Api-Api and Karamunting which in the 2018 general election was contested by the LDP that had since quit BN and also the newly-created seat of Limbahau.
PBS contested under the BN logo in the 2018 general election but will use its own logo in this election.
Earlier today, Bersatu, Star and SAPP announced they will be contesting a total of 29 seats under the PN logo in which they will clash with BN in three seats - namely Paginatan, Tulid and Sook.
Umno, PBRS and MCA, which are also part of the PN federal government, will be contesting under the BN logo in Sabah.
It is unclear whether PAS, which is also a coalition partner in the federal government, will contest under BN or PN.
PBS' latest announcement means the federal PN partners will clash in at least nine seats.
But at the Sabah level, PBS is only clashing with BN and does not have an overlap with PN.
"The seats we are contesting are PN seats. Our members, especially on the grassroots level, strongly believe that we are stronger using our own PBS flag and logo, and yet as a partner to the PN," said Ongkili.
There is a total of 73 seats up for grabs in the Sabah election set for Sept 26. Nomination day is on Sept 12.
