Malaysia does not need politicians fighting for premiership amid Covid-19: Chong

The country is not in need of political figures politicking and fighting for the premiership amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon.

Instead, he said, it needs leaders who are selfless to contribute to the nation regardless of race and religion, such as Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and Islamic preacher Ebit Lew.

Chong also praised academician Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi for actively initiating dialogues between multiracial communities with the hope to resolve group confrontation through talks.

"It's such figures that Malaysia needs, not those who are chasing after the prime minister post and criticising each other or those chanting the slogan of 'change' but keep politicking," he said during MCA's 72nd anniversary held at party headquarters today.

"We are often jeered as a party which returned to power via the 'back door', we became the talk of ridicule in coffee shops and social media. I believe our members have suffered a lot. This is normal but we don't have to fight in these low-level debates," he added.

Chong pointed out that MCA has been dedicated to serving the people since its establishment and destined to be a party for the people.

"Even with diminishing Chinese support for me, that will not affect our dedication to continue contributing to the country," he said.

He urged party members to work with other races in order to make MCA a choice for all.

Chong believed that the people will be able to see for themselves if MCA insisted on doing the right thing.

The party anniversary celebration is being held together with its 67th annual general assembly, which was postponed for three months due to the pandemic.

A total of 1,220 or 48.76 percent of party central delegates attended the general meeting. Ninety-five party leaders and central delegates were present at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, while 1,125 of them took part in the meeting via online platforms.  - Mkini
