Jobless man charged with abusing girlfriend's infant son
An unemployed man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court in Butterworth today to a charge of abusing his girlfriend’s seven-month-old son.
Muhammad Fakhri Abdul Muthalib, 25, had initially pleaded guilty when the charge was first read out to him last March 16, and the court had fixed today for sentencing.
However, he changed his plea when the charge was read out again before judge Noor Aini Yusof.
He was charged with committing the office at an apartment at Jalan Harbour Place in Butterworth at 9 pm last March 6.
The charge was framed under Section 32(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 20 years or both, upon conviction.
The court allowed Muhammad Fakhri bail of RM10,000 with one surety and set May 27 for mention.
Deputy public prosecutor Muhamad Syeqal Che Murat prosecuted, while the accused was represented by lawyer Anbananthan Yathiraju.
