Catholic Church temporarily suspends all masses in KL, Selangor
PETALING JAYA: The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur will suspend all weekend and weekday masses in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor from this Friday until further notice in light of the latest movement control order (MCO) announced by the government.
However, churches in Negeri Sembilan, Pahang and Terengganu will be allowed to continue with their masses, said Father Michael Chua, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.
“Please take note that masses will continue to be live streamed from various parishes. Parishes that are conducting live streaming should not have more than 10 volunteers present at any mass.
“Catholics residing in Kuala Lumpur and the state of Selangor are requested to refrain from travelling to neighbouring states to attend mass to avoid the risk of transmissions,” Chua said in a statement today.
He added that Archbishop Julian Leow is cognisant of the “alarming” figures of new infections, escalating rate of infectivity, and the utilisation of hospital beds and ICU approaching maximum capacity in the Klang Valley.
Furthermore, Chua noted that inter-district travel restrictions will impede the movement of parishioners and volunteers to the various churches, chapels and mass centres.
Scheduled weddings may proceed with a maximum number of 30 persons while funeral masses may be held with a maximum number of 30 persons.
All guests and family members should be pre-registered.
Chua also said that baptisms are to be postponed except in the case of an emergency, the anointing of the sick shall be reserved for urgent cases, while all home communion by holy communion ministers are to be suspended until further notice.
Confessions can be heard by way of private appointment with the priest.
The government yesterday announced that six districts in Selangor will be placed under MCO from tomorrow onwards, with Kuala Lumpur added to the list in a separate announcement today.
The MCO in the six districts in Selangor is set to end on May 17 while the MCO in Kuala Lumpur is set to end on May 20. - FMT
