Jalan Maarof cave-ins caused by rubble wall collapse, says MP
PETALING JAYA: The badly damaged Jalan Maarof in Bangsar was caused by a rubble wall collapsing under pressure from a large volume of storm water, according to Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi told FMT that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had informed him of the cause of the numerous sinkholes that appeared on Saturday night.
He was told that the rubble wall underneath the bus stop collapsed due to the large volume of water from the sudden storm.
“The pressure from this large volume of water then forced the road to crack in several locations, as water found its way just beneath the surface of the road,” he said when contacted by FMT.
For the next two weeks, he said, DBKL will be repairing and upgrading the culvert underneath the bus stop while compacting the earth under the road. The bus stop will also be reconstructed and the road surface re-tarred.
A major section of Jalan Maarof had been closed off for remedial work and further assessments after parts of the road collapsed following a heavy downpour on Saturday night.
Residents feared that more parts of the road may be damaged in the days to come as a result of thunderstorms lashing the city almost every evening. - FMT
