Perak FC supporters up in arms over state flag flying at half-mast
IPOH: Supporters of Perak’s football club are up in arms after certain irresponsible individuals flew the state’s flag at half-mast when the team started its training at Stadium Perak here yesterday.
Flags flown at half-mast are usually seen as a symbol of mourning.
It is understood that the incident was related to the late payment of salaries and the players’ disappointment with the team’s management.
In a video posted in a Facebook group for supporters, two Perak flags could be seen flying at half-mast, sparking a backlash among netizens.
Previously, a short video of players boycotting a training session was also shared in the group.
“To the person who lowered the flag, I want to teach you about respecting flags. You might lack education despite earning big bucks.
“Don’t play around with flags because this means something. A flag at half-mast is only for times of mourning,” said the Facebook post.
Other Facebook groups and pages of the club’s supporters were also buzzing with hot discussions on the incident.
“You have to be smart and understand the meaning of a flag flown at half-mast. The flag is the symbol of the state, the government, and not just the football team,” said one user.
Yesterday, a training session supposed to begin at 10pm turned into a discussion with the club’s chief executive officer Rizal Ali Naiz Ali over the late payment of players’ salaries.
A source said the discussion managed to ease some tension among the players.
“Discussions between the management and players will continue today and there are signs that a resolution will be reached,” said the source, adding that yesterday’s incident was unprecedented and a “black mark” in the state’s football history.
“I was also puzzled because many were present, including online media from Kuala Lumpur. It was as though they had ‘sniffed out’ something would happen tonight.” - FMT
