Some firms in self-imposed shutdown despite Putrajaya keeping economy open

Some businesses have opted to self-impose a shutdown of operations even though Putrajaya is keeping most of the economic sectors open during the third movement control order (MCO 3.0).

The businesses said they are taking the initiative to protect their staff and customers.

This was amid record number of new Coivd-19 cases in recent weeks and also the fact that the latest resurgence was the deadliest yet.

Fashion brand Rizalman Ibrahim Couture announced that it was suspending operations for at least two weeks.

"Following the widespread Covid-19 pandemic, the management of Rizalman Ibrahim Group of Companies has decided on a full closure for all workers and sales under RIC Group Sdn Bhd, although we have recognition from the International Trade and Industry Ministry (to operate).

"The shutdown considers the safety of our workers and to assist in reducing the spread of Covid-19," it said.

A notice of the closure was shared by its founder Rizalman Ibrahim on Instagram.

Another fashion brand TEH Songket also announced a suspension of both online and offline operations until further notice.

"The decision is to protect ourselves, our workers, and customers during this critical period," it said in a notice.

A total of 272 people have died from Covid-19 in the last seven days. The daily deaths hit new record-highs in four out of the last seven days.

Patients in the intensive care units and on ventilators are also at record highs at 531 and 277, respectively.

The 4,865 cases yesterday were also the highest since a resurgence of the third wave which began in early April. - Mkini
