Amanah Youth lodges police report against Takiyuddin

Amanah Youth chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin has lodged a police report against de facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan over the latter's remark that the cabinet would advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on whether or not the emergency should be extended.

In his report, Shazni raised concern that the minister's statement may incite discontent against the ruler.

"His statement can be conceived as Takiyuddin seemingly reminding the king that he has no other choice except to do as instructed by the cabinet when the statement itself was baseless," he said.

Shazni was referring to a June 12 statement by Takiyuddin who claimed that it is the cabinet’s responsibility to advise the king on whether or not the emergency should be extended beyond its initial August deadline.

He added that Takiyuddin's statement contradicted Section 2 of the Emergency Ordinance (Essential Powers) 2021, which provides for the establishment of the committee to advise the Agong regarding the emergency.

The 19-member Special Independent Committee on Emergency, Shazni said, is the one tasked to advise the king over the matter.

"The statement (made by Takiyuddin) also seems to be in a way, inciting the public to act against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong if he acts against the will of the Parliament or cabinet.

"Seeing it from this angle, there is a tendency to incite in his statement and this is an offence under the law," Shazni added.

Takiyuddin’s remarks prompted criticisms from Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said, among others, who argued that the government should not shift the goalposts on when the emergency will end.

Takiyuddin, however, insisted that the government has never interfered in the special committee. - Mkini
