Queries over SPM results

PETALING JAYA: The outcome of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2020 results remains in question after candidates spent most of their Form Five year learning from home, especially the highest national average grade achieved.

Melaka Action Group for Parents in Education chairman Mak Chee Kin said many were wondering why the overall results were better when lessons last year were badly affected.

“No doubt there will still be some top scorers but it’s hard to believe there’s an overall improvement if the marking scheme had remained the same, ” he told The Star, adding that negative perception of the Examinations Syndicate could not be avoided.

Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said students tended to do better in the actual exams compared to the trials.

She “strongly urged” candidates who are unhappy with their results to request a recheck of their papers.

A teacher, who wanted to be known as Mohan, said his principal had also advised those unhappy with their results to get their papers rechecked, adding that some teachers also questioned how students who did well in the trials suddenly failed the actual exam.

National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Harry Tan said parents should take it up with the authorities if they think something is amiss with their children’s scores.

Examinations Syndicate director Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali dismissed claims that the SPM 2020 results were manipulated, as there was enough security to ensure the integrity of the results.

He said all exam scripts, except Visual Arts, were uploaded into the online marking portal known as LPSkor and the examiners graded them within the system.

During an interview with Astro Awani on June 13, he also said that the Examinations Syndicate had never released the grading scale for any national exam.

Pkharuddin said the improvement in the national average grade was actually very small.

“0.06 points is only a 1.23% increase, which to us (Examinations Syndicate) is a stable change, ” he said, adding that it followed a normal distribution.

The national average grade went up to 4.80 in 2020 compared to 4.86 in 2019. A lower number means a better score.

He added that any changes of 3% and above were considered a significant change in results.

He also said that the SPM 2020 national average grade was also due to the candidates being more prepared for the exams as they had prepared for the exams three times due to it being postponed three times.

There was also additional support from parents and teachers when the candidates were learning from home, he said, adding that support was important in order to do well. - Star
