SPM 2020 best national grade average in years - minister
Over 400,000 students who made up the first cohort of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination (SPM) candidates to sit for their papers in times of the Covid-19 pandemic have achieved the best National Grade Average (GPN) index in the past five years.
Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin in a special briefing ahead of the official results to be released this morning said the GPN index for SPM 2020 was at 4.80, compared to 4.86 for SPM 2019.
"This (initial) analysis is based on results of first-time candidates who registered to sit for at least six subjects and sat for at least one," he said.
In the backdrop of challenges faced by students in rural areas to cope with online classes, as well as pockets of urban poor students, Radzi said SPM 2020 results showed a better performance across the board.
"There was a recorded improvement in the performance of both students in urban and rural areas.
"However, the performance of rural students showed a higher increase compared to students in urban areas," he said, adding that this has reduced the urban-rural gap to 0.38 for SPM 2020, compared to 0.44 the previous year.
Unlike previous years, SPM 2020 candidates will be able to access a summary of their results online at myresult1.moe.gov.my or myresult2.moe.gov.my from 10am today.
A total of 401,105 candidates had registered for SPM 2020, down from 416,416 candidates for SPM 2019.
There were 83 subjects offered, 48,014 invigilators and 24,848 teachers assigned to mark the examination papers.
