PM's new cabinet 'uninspiring', says Umno FT chief
Umno Supreme Council member Johari Abdul Ghani has described Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's new cabinet line-up as "uninspiring" as it has a majority of old faces retained from the previous administration.
Taking to Twitter, the Umno Federal Territories chief shared good wishes for Ismail Sabri but said he was hoping for a bipartisan cabinet to govern during the current Covid-19 crisis and its socio-economic impact.
"At least introduce some fresh young faces to inject more energy and enthusiasm.
"The line-up is uninspiring," said Johari who formerly served as second finance minister during former premier Najib Razak's BN administration.
With the new appointments, Johari in a series of tweets reminded Ismail Sabri that there would be no grace "honeymoon period" as grave mistakes have led to the daily streak of more than 20,000 new Covid-19 cases and record deaths.
On the economy, he cited an increase in unemployment and poverty rates, which resulted in an 11 percent drop in average household income.
"More than 100,000 small and medium enterprises have ceased to operate, and there is always news of existing investors contemplating moving out of the country due to inconsistent policies.
"Malaysia now lags behind many of its neighbouring countries, including Vietnam, which is now the biggest exporter of manufacturing products in Asean," he said.
"In fact, our foreign direct investment is the lowest in the region," he added.
Further, Johari urged the government to allay any investors' concerns through engagements with multinational companies, as well as local and foreign businesses.
As for members of the public affected by lockdown policies, the former Titiwangsa MP also proposed a targeted comprehensive income assistance plan, with a focus on B40 (bottom 40 percent of income earners) families.
Aside from Johari, opposition MPs had also launched a chorus of criticism that Ismail Sabri's cabinet was too similar to that of former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh tweeted it was "just the same old composition of #KerajaanGagal" and that the same politicians were rotating office in Putrajaya.
She also questioned the omission of expected minister candidates, including former Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said. - Mkini
