Just for testing, IGP says after images of luxurious police cars surfaced
Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani has clarified that the police are not acquiring luxury vehicles for their fleet.
In a statement today, Acryl Sani said five BMW and Volkswagen brand vehicles with police liveries were received on Oct 7.
“This is only for test or ‘proof of concept’ without any purchase agreement,” he said.
“The testing period will last for two weeks, involving the BMW M3, BMW X3 and Volkswagen Tiguan.”
He said the vehicles will be tested by the internal security and public order department, the traffic investigation and enforcement department, and the police escort branch.
“The purpose of this test is to see if these vehicles are suitable for police duties, or not,” said Acryl Sani.
He stressed that the police was aware that the government was facing financial constraints and the police has not decided on whether the vehicles were needed.
Recently, several images of luxurious vehicles equipped with police markings and accessories went viral on social media.
The images attracted mixed comments from netizens - some commended the police for the upgrade while others questioned the necessity of spending taxpayers' money while the country is still gripped by the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic. - Mkini
