Task force to ensure Proton complies with govt conditions
KOTA BARU: The government is setting up a special task force to make sure Proton Holdings Bhd fully addresses the issues and challenges it is facing.
Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed said currently Proton is facing stiff competition from other automakers, hence the task force would monitor Proton’s transformation plan.
“The government has set several conditions, so one of the main functions of the task force is to ensure the conditions are complied by Proton,” he said today.
Last Friday, the government approved Proton’s application for a soft loan of RM1.5 billion in a bid to revive the national automotive company.
A task force led by Performance Management and Delivery Unit chief executive officer Idris Jala will be established to overlook the transformation plan and ensure success.
Mustapa said the government had imposed the conditions to revitalize Proton’s business model, and because public funds were involved.
He said the task force would not be involved in the management of Proton.
“The management is up to the company, Proton is privately owned, hence that is the role of the management and the task force will monitor the level of compliance to the conditions,” he said.
