Timber licence, yes – belian, no, says Masing
The Sarawak deputy chief minister says his wife had paid RM2,000 for a 'useless' licence as no belian had been found on the site.
KUCHING: Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister James Masing today refuted a 2012 article on whistleblower site Sarawak Report claiming he and his wife were the beneficiaries of a dubious timber deal.
The report, titled “Spotlight on Masing – Corruption Exclusive”, has been making the rounds on social media since the May 9 election.
It claimed Masing’s wife, Corrinne Bua Nyipa, was awarded a Belian Timber Licence 3333 covering a massive area of land in the Baram region.
“Belian is meant to be a protected species, but we have established that Taib (then-Sarawak CM Abdul Taib Mahmud) has nevertheless been handing out exclusive concessions for the endangered wood to his political allies.
“These concessions are worth millions of ringgit because of the quality and value of Belian wood, which can sell up to RM40,000 per tree,” the report said.
Masing told FMT that his wife had applied for a belian licence in Belaga and was given 1,214ha on April 30, 1996.
“Upon investigation on the site, no belian was found. So when the licence expired the following year, it was never renewed.
“No belian was taken,” he said, adding that his wife had lost RM2,000 paying for the “useless belian licence”.
He also showed FMT a copy of the receipt for the RM2,000 security deposit.
