Agong urges parliamentarians to work towards unity

PARLIAMENT | Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V has urged all parties to work together for unity and to find solutions for the nation’s survival instead of being emotional and prejudiced.

In his opening speech for the new parliamentary session today, the ruler outlined his expectations for parliamentarians who had been sworn in yesterday.

"The people have chosen, therefore all parties should accept and respect the result of the general election without being emotional, narrow-minded, prejudiced and having slanderous thoughts that are influenced by sensationalist and speculative media.

"I hope all parties will work to find common ground and cooperate for the well-being of the people and the survival of the nation," he said.

"It is an enormous responsibility entrusted upon all the honourable members who are expected to perform their duties with dedication and integrity.

"I believe they will participate in healthy, mature, stimulating and dynamic debates to find and uphold the truth, by conveying suggestions as well as criticism with wisdom and civility," he added.

The ruler said he hopes the parliamentary institution will continue to be well respected by the people and the world at large.

Meanwhile, the ruler said he supported the abolition of the goods and services tax (GST), as part of the measures to curb the rising cost of living.

"We welcome the government's efforts to enhance transparency among others, by disclosing the government's financial position, and re-evaluating expenditures as well as practising prudent financial management.

"In order to curb the rising cost of living, I support the move to abolish GST as well as to stabilise fuel prices and to extend the 'cost of living' aid.

"I also applaud the people from all walks of life for their show of patriotism by donating to Tabung Harapan," he said.

Tabung Harapan is an initiative to allow the public to contribute towards settling the nation's debt which soared to RM1 trillion under the previous administration. - Mkini
