‘IF YOU DON’T LET US PASS, YOU ARE ALLOWING MALAYSIA TO TURN INTO A REPUBLIC’: NAJIB’S LIEUTENANTS STAGE INCENDIARY ‘AGAINST DAP RULE’ PROTEST, EVEN AS 3RD UMNO MP WHO DIDN’T WALK OUT WARNS – ‘DON’T BLINDLY FOLLOW THE LEADER’
OPPOSITION lawmakers need not necessarily follow their leaders, especially over what they think are wrong decisions, said a third Barisan Nasional MP who did not take part in the walkout in Parliament yesterday.
Labuan MP Rozman Isli said he respected the Parliament as an institution, adding that opposition lawmakers should have respected the august house and taken a different means of protest, instead of walking out.
“I also think that MPs must not all the time blindly follow the instructions of the party or the whip.
“MPs should to a certain degree, start to make their own valuation and judgment on issues debated and to be free to decide,” Rozman told The Malaysian Insight.
Rozman, alongside former youth and sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin and former foreign affairs minister Anifah Aman, were the only ones who did not walk out from Parliament yesterday as a sign of protest against the appointment of Mohd Ariff Md Yusof as Dewan Rakyat speaker.
The opposition, led by BN president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS, alleged that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not give a 14-day notice to the Parliament secretary on Ariff’s nomination as speaker.
Rozman also said BN needs to form a “new culture” and be better than Pakatan Harapan when it was opposition.
“Let’s start this new way and new culture in our Malaysian Parliament.
“I did not like many things the opposition did previously. So, I really want to see the current opposition do things differently now.” – https://ift.tt/2pAR1dR
In the 14th general election, the two-term MP defeated Warisan’s Noor Halimi Zaini by 1,450 votes.
However, there have been talks that Rozman wanted to switch sides to Warisanbefore GE14. –
Group protests against ‘DAP rule’
ABOUT 40 protesters gathered outside Parliament today to object to “DAP’s rule” in the new Pakatan Harapan government. The demonstration was led by Umno leader Lokman Noor Adam.
His civil society group, Pemantau Kerajaan Malaysia Baru or Pemantau, organised the protest to “defend the Yang di-Pertuan Agong” and oppose what it claimed was DAP’s dominance in the new government, which won the May 9 elections.
The group gathered at 8am at the car park outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters down the road from Parliament, where the Agong is to deliver his royal address for the opening of the new parliamentary session today.
Police prevented them from marching up to the Parliament gates.
Members of the group appealed to the police loudly, accusing the government of wanting to tarnish Islam.
“Let us pass! Help us give support to the Agong. If you don’t let us pass, you are allowing Malaysia to turn into a republic!” a woman shouted to police officers.
“They want to tarnish Islam. They are allowing Shias to practise,” a man said.
Several protesters pinned a sign to their shirts which read “Return power to the Agong” (Kembalikan kuasa Agong).
Several moves by the PH government since coming to power have unnerved sections of Umno and the Malays, such as the appointments of non-Muslims to the post of attorney-general and chief justice.
Pemantau’s claims that the largely Chinese DAP is calling the shots in PH are a continuation of the narrative Umno used against the then opposition party in the run up to the 14th general election. — https://ift.tt/2pAR1dR
