‘STOP BLAMING THE NON-MALAYS’ – MAHATHIR TELLS MALAYS – ‘ALL YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IS TO BE HARDWORKING, TRUSTWORTHY & KNOW HOW TO FEEL SHAME’

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it is time for the Malays to learn how to admit their own mistakes so that they can start to better themselves.

The New Economic Policy (NEP) did not work as well as anticipated in narrowing the economic gap between the Malays and the other races, but the question is why it had not been effective, he said.

“It is like us to blame others, it is like us to blame the government, the other races and so on. They are all at fault when we fail. We are never in the wrong.

“I am of the opinion that if we question ourselves and if we find that we have committed mistakes, then it is easier for us to fix ourselves, rather than asking others to fix themselves so that we can reap the benefits.

“If we can admit that we are wrong, then we should fix our mistakes,” he said in his keynote address at the Bersatu second-year anniversary celebration last night.

The celebration, which was held at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam, was attended by some 3,000 members.

The mistakes the Malays have made, he said, is that they are not as responsible or hardworking as others.

“Not only do we not work hard enough, but sometimes we also do not care about our responsibilities.

“We often do not think things through before we take (it into) account. We lack knowledge and information needed to make good decisions.

“Without permission, I dare claim we are lazy. We prefer to give our work to others,” he said.

Malays, he added, are quick to claim their rights, demanding for high salary, but at the same time, they are full of excuses not to work, all of which make investors dislike hiring them.

Perception of being untrustworthy

Another problem, he said, is that Malays are seen as being not trustworthy as they do not have a sense of responsibility when they are trusted with something.

“We make promises but we can easily break them. We are not shy about taking things or money which does not belong to us,” he said.

He cited the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN) student loans as an example of Malays being reluctant to repay their debt.

Though this may seem trivial to an individual, he said taken as a whole, it gives people a bad perception of the Malays.

“Banks are unwilling to give loans to Malays because they believe they will not pay…then (Malays) get angry at the banks.

“But we have become well-known as a stingy race,” he said.

The Malays, Mahathir said, also do not seem to be embarrassed by such a reputation.

“Yes, we are embarrassed if we are caught naked. But we do not feel embarrassed if we fail to do our jobs successfully.

“That is why our work is not as expected, because even if the quality of our products are subpar, it is okay. We will not succeed with such an attitude,” he said.

Mahathir said one would only need three values to succeed in life, that is to be hardworking, trustworthy and an ingrained sense of shame.

“There are many good life values… but with only these three we can also succeed.

“We can compete with others and win. Try it,” he said.
