Activist rues Budget 2019 for leaving out disabled community

BUDGET 2019 | Disabled activist Anthony Thanasayan has lambasted Budget 2019 for leaving out the disabled community.

Saying he was “very disappointed” with it, Anthony said the Budget proved that the Pakatan Harapan government regarded the disabled community as a case of “charity”.

“This is clearly an able-bodied(-focused) budget which leaves out the disabled.

“[...] They think of the disabled as a charity and not as equal citizens. We are very, very disappointed. It is one of the worst budgets ever.

“This Budget is not going to help us find jobs [...] it is worse than budgets by the previous (BN) administration,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

In the Budget speech delivered by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng earlier today, people with special needs were mentioned just once when he was listing out conditions for the Cost of Living Aid (BSH).

Lim said that on top of getting cash handouts, low-income households will receive an allocation of RM120 for each child under the age of 18, limited to four children. Disabled children will not be subjected to any age limit. 

Wheelchair user Anthony claimed that what the disabled community wanted was a monthly RM500 allowance.

“The money will help us in different ways, such as to start businesses,” he added.

No consultation

To his disappointment, Anthony said that the Harapan government had not consulted with the disabled community in the lead-up to Budget 2019 despite calls for it to do so.

“Usually we are called, but this time we weren’t.

“How will you know our needs if you do not sit down and ask what we need?” he questioned.

The activist had previously urged Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh to obtain feedback from the disabled community before the tabling of Budget 2019. - Mkini
