JOHOR BARU: It was all hustle and bustle at the Deepavali Bazaar here at Jalan Ungku Puan as bargain hunters looked for last-minute deals to prepare for the festival of lights.
The crowd was seen strolling past a long stretch of stalls as early as 10am in search of clothes, traditional Indian delicacies, house decorations and other items to add life to their Deepavali celebration.
Spotted among the crowd on Sunday (Nov 4) was nurse R. Shanthini , 30, who was searching for murukus and banana chips for family and friends.
"I have prepared cookies for Deepavali about a week ago and now, I am just looking out for any special deals on the last few days before Deepavali.
."I like to come here on the last days as I know traders will give out special prices to finish off their stocks," she said.
She added that the Deepavali Bazaar here is also more lively this year with colourful decorations and live events at night.
Senior executive R. Arjun, 28 and his fiancee, teacher N. Darshini, 25 were also seen at the bazaar as they hunted for deals on clothes here.
"We have done our Deepavali shopping earlier this month, but if we see anything that catches our eye, we will get it for other occasions.
"We are also looking out for Deepavali cookies and decorations to add to the ones we already have at our (respective) homes," said Arjun.
He added that Deepavali this year will be extra special for the couple as it will be the first time they are celebrating it with each other's families.
The Deepavali Bazaar here also attracts visitors from across the Causeway.
Singaporean teacher V. Janeki said she came with her daughter early in the morning to look for fresh produce at the Larkin market before heading to check out the bazaar here.
"My daughter wanted to check out the clothes and bangles they have here first, before checking out anywhere else as it is cheaper.
"I have also found a few bangles at a very good price. They will go perfectly with my saree for Deepavali this year," she added.- Star
