Harapan gov't does not need Icerd unlike others, says Dzulkefly

AMANAH AGM | The Pakatan Harapan administration need not ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) as it will uphold the concept of justice for all, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said today.

As the Amanah strategy director told the party convention in Ipoh today, the Harapan administration was not like other governments that oppressed ethnic and religious minorities in the past.

"We will continue to uphold the concept of justice for all, fairness, equality, and freedom of religion, which are all stipulated in the Federal Constitution, while at the same time supporting the constitutional monarchy.

"I want to stress, if this is the concept that this administration holds on to, we do not need to ratify Icerd, because this government and Amanah will ensure justice, and eradicate all forms of discrimination and racism.

"We do not need Icerd, although other governments do because they had been unfair to other races and cultures," he said in his winding-up speech.

Dzulkefly, the health minister, also stressed that Amanah should not sway from its aim of promoting progressive and inclusive Islam just to woo hardline Muslim and Malay voters.

"This is the time for us to stress that we will not back down from (our aim) of portraying Islam as inclusive and progressive. 

"Because we uphold the concept of Rahmatan lil alamin (Islam as a blessing for all) that calls us not to back down only because of votes and Malay politics.

"Furthermore, Malays are trapped inside Umno's extremism and narrow religious understanding championed by our opponent," he told delegates.

Citing the demography of Malaysian voters, he said Harapan can continue to govern the country until kiamat (end of the world) as long as they manage to get 25 percent of Malay votes and 35 percent of non-Malay votes. - Mkini
