Chinese Teen Dies After Rare Allergic Reaction to Anesthesia During Nose Job
A 19-year-old girl who wanted to undergo rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, was pronounced dead from a severe allergic reaction to anesthesia.
The teen, identified as Xia Lisha, had undergone a rhinoplasty procedure in Li Mei Kang hospital in Guiyang, China on January 3.
Xia, who was accompanied by her mother — only identified by the surname Wang, went to the hospital at around 1 p.m. The operation was only supposed to last for a couple of hours but she had yet to come out by 5 p.m. Worried, her mother began asking questions.
During what was supposed to be a short and straightforward operation, Xia suffered from a rare and severe reaction called malignant hyperthermia, according to Chinese media via Shanghaiist. She developed an increased rapid heart rate and an extremely high fever. Xia also convulsed with severe muscle spasms.
She was immediately transferred to the hospital across the street to be treated; later, Xia was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile, Wang wasn’t informed of her daughter’s condition until 8 p.m. After arriving in the hospital, she found out that Xia had already passed.
“She only wanted to be pretty, she didn’t deserve to die like this,” the mother cried while speaking to the media, adding that her daughter took part-time jobs just to save up for the operation that cost 26,900 yuan ($3,900).
As authorities started conducting their investigation towards the case, an inside source revealed to the media that both Xia’s family and the hospital had reached an agreement and that the family was paid more than 1.6 million yuan ($240,000) in compensation.
