KULAI: The Education Ministry has no plans to reintroduce the streaming system into schools as it is discriminatory, says Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching (pic).
"We have already decided to cancel examinations for Years One, Two and Three pupils because it is unfair to put 'high achiever' or 'low achiever' labels on our children at a young age," she added.
Teo said this when met after officiating the ministry's Ziarah Cakna programme at the Kulai district education office here on Sunday (Jan 27).
She added that she understood that there was dissatisfaction from parents and teachers about the matter, but urged them to support the ministry's initiative.
"Critics should look at Finland to see how their education system has improved to be the best in the world since they did away with the streaming system," said Teo.
The Star reported that the government's move to do away with streaming in schools had not gone down well with parents and teachers, who seem to prefer their schools revert to the streaming method. - Star
