KOTA KINABALU: Five Vietnamese fishermen who intruded into Sabah waters and caught more than RM700,000's worth of fish have been nabbed by marine officials off Sandakan.
The intruders were on a fishing boat near Pulau Jambongan Sandakan when marine police noticed them at about 11pm on Saturday (March 30).
“Our team was conducting an operation against crime at sea when they saw the boat,” Sandakan Marine Police commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said in a statement Sunday (March 31).
He said an inspection of the vessel was carried out, and the Vietnamese captain, who had come into Sabah waters with a crew of four, failed to produce a fishing permit when requested.
ACP Mohamad said the fish, vessel and crew were brought back to the marine base for further investigations under the Fishery Act 1985.
In another operation, marine police in Semporna foiled a smuggling attempt during an integrated operation with the Immigration Department and the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry on Saturday (March 30).
The operation, which was held from about 8am to 4pm, saw a 16-year-old local from a house in Pulau Kalapuan nabbed for having 600l of fuel believed readied for smuggling into a neighbouring country.
“The fuel, worth about RM1,320, was seized,” ACP Mohamad said.- Star
