UEC task force happy with results after meeting MPs from both sides
The UEC task force met with a number of parliamentarians from both sides of the political divide in Parliament to discuss the issues surrounding recognition for the upper secondary examination today.
"The meeting was exactly what I was looking for, I need real feedback from MPs who are in touch with their constituencies.
"I understood from them where the issue is located, what are the things that need clarification, what were their suggestions, what are some of the technical difficulties.
"This is exactly what I wanted, (it was) very positive," task force chairperson Eddin Khoo told reporters after the closed-door meeting today.
The main concerns raised during the meeting, he said, were technical issues such as the effects on the students right now, the impact on the national education system and how the national education system can be improved.
Khoo is a writer and cultural conservationist. He is also the son of the late historian Khoo Kay Kim, who helped draft the Rukun Negara.
The two other members of the task force are Angkatan Belia Islam (Abim) president Mohamad Raimi Abdul Rahim and Dong Zong deputy chairperson Tan Yew Sin.
At the same time, PKR's Kangar MP Noor Amin Ahmad said he personally suggested a new form of examination for university enrolment so that UEC and SPM graduates can both compete based on meritocracy.
However, MCA's Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong dismissed this suggestion, claiming that UEC graduates should be at the same level as STPM graduates, not SPM.
Wee also said that even though some states claimed to support and recognise the UEC, the final decision, especially for university enrolment, still depended on the federal government.
It was previously reported that the task force was planning to submit its final report at the end of October after meeting with MPs and groups from Sabah and Sarawak. - Mkini
