Anwar hopes AG drops appeal against Rafizi in NFC case
AYER KEROH: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said he hopes Attorney-General Tommy Thomas will drop the appeal against Rafizi Ramli’s acquittal under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act (Bafia) for allegedly revealing bank accounts related to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).
Speaking at a dinner to commemorate 20 years of Reformasi, Anwar said he was disappointed to hear of the appeal but was thankful after reading that Thomas plans to rescind the appeal.
“Rafizi’s case involving the NFC is related to the people and it helped us realise that funds were being misused by the authorities.
“So we accept (that the appeal will be dropped). I really hope it happens.”
Earlier, Thomas, who seemed to be in the dark over the appeal, told theedgemarkets.com that he will rescind it on Monday.
He also expressed shocked that the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) had filed an appeal against the PKR vice-president’s acquittal last month as he had decided against it.
The High Court in Shah Alam had, on Nov 15, acquitted and discharged Rafizi after overturning his conviction last year for revealing bank accounts related to NFC, its subsidiary companies and its chairman, Salleh Ismail.
On a separate matter, Anwar apologised to the people and members over a series of melees at this morning’s PKR Youth congress.
He said the fighting crossed the line and he would leave it to the police to take action.
“If a crime has been committed, I ask PKR disciplinary board head Ahmad Kassim to quickly investigate and sack anyone responsible.”
Police had earlier said they had arrested two men in connection with the disturbances, which led to two men being injured. - FMT
