International Student Viciously Beaten For Speaking Mandarin in Australia

A Chinese man in Australia was beaten to near blindness by a man who got pissed because he spoke Mandarin.

Identified only as Constantine, the victim of the brutal assault is reportedly an international student who traveled to Australia to learn historical fencing.

Constantine’s fencing teacher Mark Holgate narrated on Facebook that his student was walking down a street in Adelaide on Saturday when a man suddenly approached him and berated him with racist insults.

“Today I’m angry and ashamed to be Australian,” Holgate wrote. “Three days ago a Chinese student of mine was cowardly assaulted for walking down the street speaking another language.”

According to Holgate, the stranger allegedly ordered the 29-year-old student to speak English. Constantine, whom Holgate described as “one of the nicest people” he has met, then got punched in the face for speaking his native language. The assault left the Constantine’s eye damaged and his cheekbone terribly injured.

Holgate lamented that Constantine was at risk of losing his eyesight unless he underwent a costly reconstructive surgery.

A GoFundMe page set up by Holgate has so far raised $5,870 raised of the $6,000 goal for Constantine’s hospital bills.

“He is going into surgery very soon, but he faces a huge out lay because he is not an Australian citizen,” Holgate wrote. “Victims of crime have been notified, but we face a long wait before he gets any recompense. Funds will go towards his medical expenses and recovery, and a gift from the historical fencing community for him.”

Holgate added in the post that the alleged attacker was arrested after returning to the scene of the crime. The man has since been charged with assault and property damage, MailOnline reports.

“Police attended the scene and located the offender where he was arrested and charged with assault and property damage,” a police spokesperson was quoted as saying. “A 24-year-old man from Noarlunga Downs was granted police bail and he will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 30.”

In the funding campaign’s most recent update, Holgate shared that Constantine’s surgery was a success and the student was already discharged from the hospital.

“He is still quite uncomfortable, but was looked after well and has been discharged from hospital,” he noted. “He is really appreciating the messages of encouragement and compassion. Your compassion helps, and goes a long way to showing him that so many Australians care for him and find his treatment abhorrent. Thank you so much.”
