Mat Hasan says current cabinet makes PN 'fragile'
Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has joined the chorus of party leaders dissatisfied with their lot in Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's cabinet.
He said if the cabinet does not follow past political practices, it could make Perikatan Nasional (PN) "fragile" which could lead to "failure".
"It is clear that Umno, as the biggest bloc of MPs, has been sidelined in an unfair manner that can be seen in two matters," he said in a Facebook post tonight.
The two matters are, Umno being assigned to non-critical ministries, and Bersatu and Azmin Ali's camp taking the lion's share of portfolios.
He said while government positions are not the most important thing for Umno in the current political climate, it was pertinent for Muhyiddin to take cognisant of party proportions.
This is as Malaysia follows the Westminster system, and that it is established practice for distribution of cabinet seats to be proportionate to the number of seats a party has in Parliament.
Mohamad said that given the current Covid-19 pandemic, and economic instability, it was important to not "delay and make mistakes".
He said a strong and inclusive cabinet was important to PN's success and that without it, Malaysia would continue to face political polemics.
Bersatu currently holds disproportionately more cabinet and deputy minister positions relative to the number of Dewan Rakyat seats in the coalition that comprises Umno, PAS and GPS.
This has led to complaints by the likes of Johor Bahru Umno division head Shahrir Samad, Umno supreme council member Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and even Annuar himself, who was appointed a cabinet minister.
After the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday, its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had defended the composition of Muhyiddin's cabinet.
Zahid said Umno would serve a "check and balance" role in Muhyiddin's government. - Mkini
