Gov’t mulls relocating Masjid India enhanced MCO residents

CORONAVIRUS | The government may relocate residents of the Selangor Mansion and Malayan Mansion buildings to quarantine stations due to cramped conditions in these premises, said Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa.

Earlier today, the two buildings have been placed under an enhanced movement control order (MCO), which would bar anyone from entering or leaving the area until all its residents have been screened for Covid-19 infection.

Astro Awani today quoted Annuar saying that several units in Selangor Mansion were found to have as many as 30 people living in a single unit.

It was earlier reported that there are about 6,000 residents in 365 residential and commercial units in the buildings, but Annuar reportedly said there are nearly 7,000.

“When we find the density is too high and the Health Ministry advises to relocate them, we will look at that possibility.

“It means they (the residents) need to go to a quarantine centre. It also depends on the increasing number of cases influenced by the population density.

"Here, there are some who live according to shifts, some who sit at home during the day, and some who sit at home at night. When we implemented the enhanced MCO, 20 or 30 people from the same unit had to be home at the same time.

"This can only make the situation worse. If that is the case, other than Health Ministry advising them to reduce their numbers to a manageable number and safer in terms of health, we have no other choice but to take them to a quarantine centre," he was quoted saying.

Earlier today, Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 15 Covid-19 cases have been detected in the two buildings, necessitating the enhanced MCO until the screening process is complete.

Police and army personnel have cordoned off the buildings even before Ismail had made the announcement.

Unlike the previous areas placed under the enhanced order, there is no definitive timeline until the order is lifted.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry will take up to 10 days to screen all residents and decontaminate the buildings. - Mkini
