Nearly 15,000 detained for defying MCO under Phase 1 and 2
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 14,922 individuals were held during Phase 1 and 2 of the movement control order (MCO) which began on March 18, said Bukit Aman CID director Huzir Mohamed.
He said from the total, 5,830 were charged in court and are serving their sentences.
Huzir said police also identified six individuals who were repeat offenders of the MCO.
“Yes, we are tracking down these repeat violators. We will not hesitate to take sterner action against those who continue to defy the order.
“Apart from that, offenders under Phase Three will no longer be issued compound fine notices. Those arrested will straight away be charged in court,” he said at a special media conference at Bukit Aman here today.
He said police would continue to open investigation papers and bring MCO violators to the deputy public prosecutor to charge them.
“Why are we doing this? This is because many are still not complying with the MCO when this should not be happening,” he said.
Huzir advised the people to continue adhering to MCO under Phase Three, starting today until April 28, to ensure the Covid-19 outbreak is brought under control.
Some motorists stopped at roadblocks have been giving silly excuses for not following the stay-at-home order.
Serdang district police chief Ismadi Borhan said a motorist stopped said he needed to send a cat to a girlfriend’s house. Another said he had to go to the pawnshop while another said he had to meet a friend.
Ismaidi said such selfishness caused a massive traffic jam of several kilometres on main roads around the district.
He said police would not compromise with those who are adamant and ignored the MCO.
“Previously, we had placed four roadblocks in the Serdang area. At 8am yesterday, two additional roadblocks were mounted, including along Jalan Puchong.
“We found that several vehicles, including heavy vehicles, were using this road to avoid roadblocks at other locations.”
He said at least 100 heavy vehicles had used the route at any one time yesterday, causing unusual traffic congestion.
He said Serdang police had detained 196 individuals since March 18 and 143 compound notices were issued. - FMT
