Shahul Hameed appointed as new HRDF CEO

Malaysiakini

My Events International founder Shahul Hameed Dawood has been appointed as the new Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF) chief executive officer, according to sources.
Malaysiakini understands that the appointment of Shahul (above) will begin next week. He will take over from the former HRDF chief executive Elanjelian Venugopal, who was reportedly removed from his position by Human Resources Minister M Saravanan last month.
When contacted, Shahul declined to comment, stating that an official announcement on his appointment must be made by the HRDF board.
Since yesterday, various groups and individuals - including the Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry - have congratulated Shahul on his new position.
However, there were others who highlighted that his event company had, in 2016, been involved in the organisation of a series of talks featuring controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik.
At the time, Shahul had reportedly engaged with the authorities, including then inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar, to lift a ban against a final programme in Malacca that featured Zakir as a speaker.

M Saravanan
Describing Shahul as a purported follower of Zakir, critics questioned Saravanan's move as a minister from MIC - whose party had consistently objected to the presence of the Mumbai-born televangelist Malaysia - to appoint Shahul to the position.
The Malay Mail on April 1 reported that Elanjelian, along with HRDF chairperson Noor Farida Ariffin and four other board members, had their contracts prematurely terminated by the Human Resources Ministry.
Noor Farida was quoted as saying that Elanjelian's term as CEO was set to expire in July this year, while her own tenure as chairperson was supposed to end only in January next year. - Mkini
