PKR denies withdrawing support for Dr M, tells daily to correct 'false' report
PKR has denied withdrawing its support for Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad to become prime minister.
In a statement today, the party’s communications director Fahmi Fadzil said no such decision was made during the PKR central leadership committee meeting on Sunday, contrary to a report by Sinchew Daily this evening.
“I was present at the meeting and have reviewed the minutes and wish to inform that the matter was not discussed nor decided upon by the committee. Therefore, the report by Sinchew is false.
“For information, the central leadership committee meeting on Sunday discussed party disciplinary issues as well as preparations for the parliamentary session on May 18.
“I sternly urge Sinchew to retract or correct the report immediately,” he said.
Earlier, the Chinese-language daily quoted sources claiming that the PKR central leadership committee had decided to withdraw the party’s support for Mahathir during a meeting on May 17.
The source reportedly said Anwar told the meeting about his relationship with Mahathir and proposed withdrawing support for Mahathir as prime minister. Supposedly, no one dissented.
“After the fall of the Pakatan Harapan-led government, PKR leaders including Anwar no longer want to be used by Mahathir and have lost confidence in Mahathir.
“PKR will still continue to maintain a working relationship with Mahathir, but would no longer support him as prime minister,” the source was quoted as saying. - Mkini
