Police bust ring producing fake Covid-19 test results
CORONAVIRUS | Police have busted an operation that was producing fake Covid-19 test result slips for RM50 apiece.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim said the illicit business had been running for one to two weeks and it is believed the fake slips were sold to migrant workers who wanted them for employment purposes.
Two migrant workers were found operating two street-front shops offering the service along Jalan Alor in the capital.
Both of them were detained, and Mazlan said it was discovered they were employed by two locals who paid them around RM1,500 and RM1,700 a month.
Police also seized two laptops, printers, genuine Covid-19 test result slips, a blank template for the result slip which features the letterhead of a private lab, and RM1,331 in cash.
"Kuala Lumpur police take seriously the forging of Covid-19 test results and stern action will be taken against those who break the law," Mazlan said in a statement last night.
It is not clear how many of the fake test slips have been produced.
The case is being investigated under Section 22(d) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act, Sections 468 and 471 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act.
Recently, there was an outbreak of Covid-19 among undocumented migrant workers held at immigration detention depots. This pushed daily figures of Covid-19 cases to a record high of 277 on Friday.
Workers in several sectors, including in construction, have been required to undergo Covid-19 testing before they are allowed to work onsite. - Mkini
