48-year-old Mother Dies of Cardiac Arrest During Nap in Hougang Flat, Took 10 Hours For Family To Realise

A 48-year-old woman passed away in her Hougang home while taking an afternoon nap, but it took her family about 10 hours before they realised she had passed away.

According to her husband, the mother-of-one took an afternoon nap in the living room and remained asleep until past midnight.

“I was still chatting with her normally when I came back home around noon that day. She was asleep on the couch at around 2pm, all the way until past midnight,” the husband revealed in an interview with Lianhe Wanbao.

However, his wife remained unresponsive when he called out to her. He also realised that his wife’s body was cold when he touched her hand.

After realising what had happened, the man immediately called the paramedics and informed his son who was also at home then.

The woman was declared dead when the paramedics arrived.

According to reports from Lianhe Wanbao, the cause of death was due to a cardiac arrest.

The man revealed tearfully to the Chinese news outlet that when his wife was alive, she always worried about him and their son.

“My wife really loved my son and I. The thing she was most worried about was our family’s future.”

Wife Suffered from Mental Health Issues

While the family of three living in a two-room HDB unit in Hougang had been unemployed for some time, the man shared that his wife suffered from schizophrenia for over 10 years, which caused her to be unemployed for many years.

The day when the incident took place (27 Aug) was when his wife was supposed to head to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for an appointment. She eventually decided to stay home as she felt unwell.

Looking back, the man shared that there is a  possibility that his wife could have passed away not long after she fell asleep, considering that her body was already stiff when he discovered her.

It is said that the man had been staying home to care for his wife since he remained unemployed after the circuit breaker. He previously worked as a cleaner.

While he explained that the government payouts they have received allowed them to get by this year, they are uncertain about the future.

He said: “I hope that I can find a job at a warehouse or as a delivery man to earn some money to take care of my son.”

Emotional Toll on Family

Beyond financial strains, his wife’s death has also taken an emotional toll on their son who is said to be suffering from anxiety issues even before the incident.

“Everyone’s telling me that my mother has died, but I can’t accept that. She was still fine just a second ago, how could she suddenly be dead?” he said.

Lianhe Wanbao wrote that he had been unable to accept his mother’s death, possibly due to the side effects of medication to tackle his anxiety.

Following his mother’s death, the son also expressed his regret for not spending more time with his mother when she was still alive. According to him, he had been conscious of how others would look at them as his mother’s appearance had become “abnormal” due to her mental illness.

“I hardly went out with her as people would cast weird looks at us. If I could rewind time and start over, I would proudly take her out. But it’s too late now,” he recounted.
