Anwar: Harapan prepared to consider tie-up with Dr M’s new party if he asks

Pakatan Harapan is prepared to consider admitting former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s new party as a component party, said coalition chairperson Anwar Ibrahim.

However, he said he has yet to receive any such request from Mahathir.

“He didn’t ask,” Anwar replied when queried on whether Harapan would accept Mahahtir’s newly established party as a component party.

“If he asks, we will consider it. Let him ask first,” he told reporters after a political roadshow held in Shah Alam tonight.

Mahathir had today announced the formation of a new Malay and bumiputera party and claimed that his party didn't need to be big in numbers as long as its members were committed.

He said the party may not win enough seats to form a government but could become kingmaker in deciding which bloc would win the next general election.

Anwar said since Mahathir had just announced the formation of the party, he would adopt a “wait and see” approach.

“(Mahathir) just announced that he is forming a new party, so we’ll watch,” he said.

He declined to comment on whether it was appropriate for Mahathir to set up a new party. - Mkini
