Information received on police involvement in gambling protection racket, say cops

Bukit Aman says officers and policemen who have taken bribes will be referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday confirmed receiving information about a handful of officers and policemen suspected of protecting illegal gambling premises around Sungai Buloh, near here.
Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Zamri Yahya said they were checking the information received, including on the gambling premises around Sungai Buloh.
He said they were also investigating the raids and seizures of gambling devices that had been carried out as well as several other related issues.
“If it is proven that there was police misconduct and malpractice involved in protecting the syndicate, stern disciplinary action will be taken against them,” he told Bernama.
“If any officers and policemen have taken bribes, they will be referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for further action.”
Bernama had reported that MACC would investigate allegations of authorities trying to protect illegal premises, illegal gambling activities and the sale of contraband cigarettes around Sungai Buloh.
This followed a live video broadcast through the “Hot Burger Malaysia” Facebook account which was also shared by a 42-year-old named Mohd Asri Hamid.
Asri, under the name “Asri Janggut”, claimed that the authorities had not taken any action against gambling activities in Sungai Buloh. He also revealed what he said were the locations of these sites.
Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Shafa’aton Abu Bakar denied the allegations, saying the police had opened an investigation paper and would call the users of the social media site to have their statements recorded. - FMT
